Shopify vs a custom website for a small business

For most small shops Shopify is enough. Here is when it is not.

Small business owners often ask whether they should build on Shopify or have a website coded from scratch. Both are valid. The right choice depends on what you sell, how quickly you need to launch, and whether you need anything a standard store cannot do.

What each option is

  • Shopify is a hosted platform for online stores. Payments, checkout, inventory and hosting are handled for you, and you customise a theme.
  • A custom website is coded specifically for you, for example with the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js). You decide every feature, and you also carry the responsibility for hosting and maintenance.

Where Shopify is the better choice

  • You sell physical or digital products and want to start selling quickly.
  • You want checkout, order management and payment integrations that already work.
  • You do not have a developer on call for fixes and updates.
  • You are on a tight budget and want lower upfront cost.

Where a custom website is the better choice

  • You need logic a store cannot provide: bookings with rules, user dashboards, custom pricing, multi-vendor marketplaces or unusual workflows.
  • Your product is a service or software, not primarily a shop.
  • You need to integrate deeply with your own systems.
  • You want full control over how everything works and are ready to pay for it.

Cost and time

Shopify normally has a lower upfront cost and a faster launch, but you pay ongoing subscription fees to Shopify, and sometimes for themes and apps. Depending on the payment method, there can be transaction fees as well. Check Shopify's current pricing page rather than trusting any number in an article.

A custom site costs more upfront and takes longer, but there is no platform subscription. You still pay for hosting, domain, and developer time when things change.

Maintenance

On Shopify, the platform handles security, hosting and updates. On a custom site, someone has to update packages, monitor the server and fix bugs, so plan for a support arrangement.

Flexibility versus speed

Custom is more flexible. Shopify is faster. Many businesses start on Shopify, prove that people buy, and only then invest in custom features. That is usually cheaper than building something big before you know what customers want.

A simple way to decide

  1. List the features you truly need in the first version.
  2. Check whether a Shopify theme plus standard apps can do them.
  3. If yes, start on Shopify.
  4. If no, or if your product is not mainly a shop, talk to a developer about a custom build.

We build both. See our Shopify website development page or our custom website development page, and tell us what you need. We will say plainly if the cheaper option will do.
