Meta Ads (Facebook & Instagram)

Why your Meta Ads get clicks but no sales

Clicks are cheap; sales are not. Here is a checklist to find where the funnel breaks.

If your ads get plenty of clicks but nobody buys, the problem is almost never that "Meta ads do not work". Something between the click and the purchase is broken. The trick is to find out where.

Step 1: Check that tracking works

Before judging your ads, confirm Meta can actually see your sales. Check that the Meta Pixel is installed and that purchase events fire when you place a test order. Also compare orders in Meta Ads Manager with orders in your store dashboard. If Meta shows zero purchases but your store shows some, the ads may be working while the tracking is not.

Step 2: Look at the funnel

Write down how many people did each step, from ad click to purchase:

  • Link clicks in Ads Manager
  • Landing page views
  • Product views
  • Add to cart
  • Checkout started
  • Purchases

The biggest drop tells you where to look.

If many clicks but few landing page views

People clicked but left before the page loaded. Your page is probably slow on mobile, or people are accidentally tapping. Test the page on a mobile connection, compress large images and remove heavy scripts.

If people land but do not add to cart

  • The ad promised something the page does not show. Make the landing page match the ad.
  • The price, delivery or trust signals are unclear. Show price, delivery time and return policy early.
  • The page is hard to use on a phone. Buttons too small, text too long, images too heavy.
  • The product photos and description do not answer basic questions.

If people add to cart but do not buy

  • Unexpected shipping charges or extra costs appearing at checkout
  • Forced account creation
  • Limited payment options. Check that the payment methods your customers prefer are available
  • A slow or confusing checkout
  • Low trust: no visible policies, contact details or reviews

If the funnel looks fine but sales are still low

  • The audience is wrong: people are curious but not buyers. Check who is actually clicking.
  • The creative attracts clicks with a curiosity hook that does not qualify buyers. Test creatives that show the real product and price.
  • The offer is not strong enough for a cold audience who has never heard of you.
  • The budget is too small or spread too thin for the ads to learn.
  • The product price does not leave enough margin after ad costs, in which case the ad may be working but not profitably.

What to do this week

  1. Place a test order and confirm the purchase is tracked.
  2. Open your store on a phone using mobile data and time how long it takes to load.
  3. Write down the funnel numbers and find the biggest drop.
  4. Fix one thing at a time so you know what made the difference.
  5. Give changes enough time and budget before judging them.
